Watered-Down Preaching

“Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

My family and I live in Dalton, GA. We were looking for a church home and visited Rockbridge for five months. We decided to stop attending there because we were starving for more in-depth sermons that would help us and the people around us mature in Christ. Rockbridge does not provide such preaching.

The sermons at Rockbridge are tailored to focus on your personal issues (your job, your finances, your relationships), a sort of life-coaching from a Christian perspective. God’s word is watered-down and the Scriptures are used mostly out of context to fit into whatever Matt Evans’ main topic is for the week…a topic which has more to do with YOU than God.

It seems to me that Rock Bridge was strategically established as an entrepreneurial endeavor under the seeker sensitive business model of church. Rockbridge Community Church is a business, tailored to get you to come in, make a profession of faith, give money, and volunteer in one of its growth-focused areas of ministry. You exist there to get more people in the door.

Rockbridge is an easy-going casual environment, an environment which matches the style of Evans’ sermons. We left because we simply didn’t meet the criteria for their target demographic: lost and unchurched people.
